The Pros and Cons of Moving to the Bronx

Tuesday, January 14, 2025

If you’re considering moving to the Bronx, you likely have many questions about safety, lifestyle, and what it’s like to live there. As local real estate agents with years of experience in the Bronx and Westchester County, we’re here to offer our perspective on living here. We’ll address common concerns and provide insights to help you make an informed decision.

The Pros and Cons

When considering a move, it’s helpful to weigh the pros and cons. Let’s explore some of the key aspects of life in the Bronx:

  • Safety: (Con) Safety is often the first question people have about the Bronx. While headlines might paint a dramatic picture, the reality is more balanced. Yes, like any urban area, the Bronx has its challenges, but safety largely depends on your perspective and behavior.

As Damaris, who has lived in the Bronx since 2013, points out, “You go about your business, don’t bother anybody, and nobody’s going to bother you.” Crime rates in the Bronx are slightly higher than the New York City average, with 8.9 violent crimes per 1,000 people compared to the citywide average of 5.1. However, it’s important to note that New York City isn’t among the top 25 most dangerous cities in the U.S., and crime rates have significantly decreased since their peak in the 1970s and 1980s.

Many neighborhoods in the Bronx are safe and welcoming. Like any city, being aware of your surroundings and avoiding risky behavior goes a long way in ensuring your safety.

  • Cleanliness: (Con) The Bronx struggles with cleanliness. Streets and sidewalks in many areas aren’t cleaned as regularly as they should be, and trash pickup can be inconsistent. While efforts have been made to improve this, the borough still has room for growth compared to areas like Westchester.

  • Parking: (Pro) Compared to Manhattan, parking in the Bronx is more manageable. While it may take a few minutes to find a spot, it’s generally available. However, overpopulation and new construction projects have made parking more challenging in some areas, so parking is not as easy as it once was.

  • Friendly Neighbors: (Pro) The Bronx’s sense of community varies by neighborhood, but many areas, like Throggs Neck, are known for their friendly residents. Damaris recalls the welcoming atmosphere of her neighbors and the strong sense of community.

  • Public Transportation: (Pro) The Bronx has one of the most expansive public transportation systems in the country. Subways, local and express busses to help commute to Manhattan. A new ferry system was built recently to also help commuters get to work. All of these option provide convenient and affordable ways to get around without a car.

  • Parks & Green Spaces: (Pro) The Bronx boasts some of the largest parks in New York City, including Pelham Bay Park, Ferry Point Park and Van Cortlandt Park. The New York Botanical Garden is another gem, offering a tranquil escape.

  • Attractions: (Pro) The Bronx is home to iconic attractions like Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, and the Botanical Garden. These sites offer entertainment and cultural experiences for all ages.

  • Infrastructure: (Con) The Bronx’s infrastructure shows its age, with frequent repairs to roads, gas lines, and plumbing. This can lead to inconvenience and noise in certain areas.

  • Noise Levels: (Con) The Bronx is a bustling urban area, and noise is part of daily life. From traffic to vibrant street life, peace and quiet can be hard to find.

  • Food and Restaurants: (Pro) The Bronx offers a culinary scene rich in diversity. From Italian favorites at The Pine to authentic Dominican cuisine at Imperial, food lovers have endless options to explore.

  • Schools: (Con) Public schools in the Bronx face challenges, with only a few achieving high ratings. Families often consider private schools or relocating to areas with stronger public school systems.

  • Affordability: (Both) While housing in the Bronx is more affordable than in Manhattan or Brooklyn, prices have risen significantly. The average cost of a single-family home is around $644,000, still lower than other boroughs but higher compared to neighboring states like New Jersey or Connecticut.

  • Housing Availability: (Con) Housing inventory in the Bronx is limited, making it a competitive market for both renters and buyers. Rising demand has also driven up prices, with the average one-bedroom rental costing over $2,100 per month.

  • Beaches: (Con) While the Bronx technically has Orchard Beach, it doesn’t offer the same experience as traditional beaches with waves and swimmable waters.

Living in the Bronx has its pros and cons, and the decision ultimately depends on your priorities. If you value cultural diversity, accessibility, and a vibrant urban lifestyle, the Bronx might be the perfect fit. On the other hand, if you’re seeking more space, quieter neighborhoods, and top-rated schools, you might lean toward areas like Westchester.
